Addressing challenges, resource and material shifts

The challenge

The lightweight timber-framed (LTF) construction sector is already falling behind its competitors, and needs to simplify its design, certification and supply processes and expand its solutions for customers.

The solution

This project will conduct research that will address optimising timber use, fabrication and installation in low-rise LTF construction designed under the National Construction Code ‘Deemed to Satisfy’ (DTS) pathway, and ultimately improve productivity.

The approach is to define the new bounds of a DTS lightweight framing system and examine the efficient use of timber members and construction practices, on-site and off-site, as well as ways to adopt a wider range of wood products in construction.

Outcomes

The research outcomes will provide necessary evidence to resolve key productivity barriers in the LTF building sector, allowing more buildings to be built with the existing resource. With this research, industry can then propose and take carriage to implement changes to the Australian Standard AS1684 or create new industry standards.

“The design and approvals processes are outdated, still based on traditional sawn timber methods, while today’s homes increasingly use engineered wood products. Competing materials don’t face these challenges.”
