Australian Forest and Wood Innovations (AFWI) is a recently established national research institute committed to fulfilling the Australian Government’s promise of establishing a National Institute for Forest Products Innovation across the country.

Situated at the University of Tasmania’s Newnham campus, AFWI is poised to play a crucial role in advancing national forestry research, development, and engagement (RD&E). The institute will strategically coordinate and deliver Australian-made solutions to address key challenges within the forestry sector.

AFWI’s research initiatives are designed to benefit the Australian forest and wood product industries, assisting them in extracting more value from sustainable forestry practices.

Through its national research centres and open calls for research, AFWI will actively support innovative projects that bring about changes in how the industry manages forests, emphasising their diverse values. Furthermore, AFWI is committed to exploring new applications of wood that will contribute to the well-being of our community in the future.

From ideas to impact

AFWI’s researchers and Research Centres will collaborate with the forest and wood product industries to deliver innovative outcomes. 

This includes improved sustainability, increased onshore processing, new high-value products, economic growth, job creation, and enhanced long-term research capacity.
