Breeding resilience into our plantations in the face of more challenging growing conditions.

The challenge

More challenging growing conditions for plantation species are likely under climate change and any expansion beyond traditional growing areas. Genetic improvement can deliver greater resilience in both softwood and hardwood plantations and sustain or improve productivity.

The solution

In this project advanced generation genetic material for radiata pine, southern pines, blue gum, shining gum and some other promising species and provenances within the species will be tested across a broader range of environments, specifically targeting drier and more challenging environments.

Outcomes

A major outcome will be a pre-emptive plan to manage future risks with changing environments due to climate change and industry expansion – leading to more resilient softwood and hardwood plantations.
